RICHMOND, Virginia, June 10 / PRNewswire / – September 8, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – Today, Smithfield Foods’ Helping Hungry Homes® initiative is a program to help alleviate hunger and help Americans maintain their Safe Food Wegman’s Food Markets will donate nearly 40,000 pounds of protein and 9,000 pounds of non-perishable food to the Virginia FeedMore Center. Donating nearly 160,000 servings helps hungry people in 34 cities and counties in Central Virginia, where one in seven people is not safe to eat.

Helping customers
Representatives from Smithfield and Wegmans presented the donation to FeedMore this morning at an event that raised awareness of the impact of hunger on the local community. Members of all three organizations discussed the importance of donating protein to nearly 200,000 people, including one in six hungry children every day in Central Virginia.

Smithfield’s donation to FeedMore was part of the 2017 Helping Hungry Homes® national tour. During the annual tour, Smithfield will provide significant protein donations to nearly 60 food banks across the country. This donation is in addition to the more than 65 million servings of protein that have been donated since 2011.
